So you want to learn about chakras but have no idea where to even start? Rest assured, I understand how overwhelming topics like this can appear to be at first glance so I will break it down in small portions. Chakras are energy centres within the body and there are 7 points, each with a different colour. They all connect to different parts of your physical and emotional life and they all need to be open and flowing in synchronicity for optimal wellbeing within your mind, body and soul. Why do they need to be in synchronicity? Well because if one chakra is blocked it can stop the energy from flowing efficiently throughout the rest of your energy centres which can lead to stagnation and unhappiness.
The 1stpoint is called a ‘root chakra’ and it is located at the bottom of your spine by your tailbone. It is red in colour, aligns with the element of earth and its associated animal is an elephant. This chakra is directly linked to all things security so if it is blocked you may feel that you are constantly worried about your well being in relation to safety. This could mean that you feel threatened in some way or are in a panic about something to such an extent that you feel anxious. Having this block could mean you often feel like: your energy is ungrounded, a lack of confidence when it comes to change and growth, worry around basic needs such as shelter or money, that you are in survival mode and a general sense of unsafety. Common situations that may unbalance your root chakra could be experiencing loss, getting fired from a job, money problems and conflict with close friends or family.
Below are some root chakra problems and commonly associated symptoms:
- Increased anxiety
- Panic attacks or panic attack symptoms e.g. hyperventilation
- Negativity towards yourself and others
- Inability to concentrate
- Low self-confidence
- Doubts about the things you used to take for granted
- Inability to make own decisions
- A need for external validation and feedback
- Cold hands and feet
- Back pain
- Pain in legs
When it is balanced however this means that you will feel stable, relaxed, comfortable with where you are in your life and you will feel safe and confident when exploring new things. Some crystals that help balance your root chakra are red jasper, red carnelian, obsidian and bloodstone. You can also explore meditations, yoga techniques and eating certain foods that are red in colour and derive from roots like beetroot, garlic and potatoes. Additionally you can also use root chakra affirmations that revolve around feeling safe, secure, having needs met and being supported.
Next is the Sacral Chakra, which is the 2ndpoint and it is located two inches below the navel. Its orange in colour, represents the element of water and its associated animal is a crocodile. This chakra is responsible for your drive, playfulness, romantic satisfaction, feelings of pleasure and confidence within your creations.
If this chakra is out of alignment then you might have a low sex drive, resist change, feel bored and face addiction of some sort or admire those who have addictive personality traits. It can be pushed out of alignment by repetitive and boring schedules and from excessive negative feedback on your artistic creations or on your sex drive. For example, if you enjoy a certain amount of sex and you get criticised or attacked in an unconstructive way for wanting to have that desire fulfilled.
Below is a comprehensive list of common sacral chakra problems and symptoms:

The 3rdchakra is the solar plexus, which is located on the top of your abdomen in your stomach area. It is yellow in colour, represents the element of fire and its associated animal is a Ram. This point is related to your overall confidence levels, insecurities and self-esteem. This could have a lot to do with how you respond to criticism, whether you feel deserving of good things, if you feel good enough, your self-discipline, how you respond to difficulties, how independent you are and how you perceive yourself and your purpose in the world.
If this chakra is out of alignment then you may not feel confident within your capabilities and physical attributes in one or more aspects of your life. It will also leave you feeling un-motivated to achieve your goals. Abrupt life changes, clinging onto past hurt and anything that makes you feel undermined can push this chakra out of balance. For example if you told your close friends and family about your goals and what you believe your life purpose is and did not get a supportive response then this can impact your solar plexus chakra in a negative way. Another example could be if you keep replaying something that you regret doing over and over in your head, by clinging onto this guilt you are throwing this chakra out of balance.

This point is related to your capacity to express empathy, how caring you can be towards others, how emotionally vulnerable you are willing to be, self knowledge, self reflective capabilities and your inner peace.
If this chakra is out of balance then you may feel that you struggle to express compassion, relate to people, inability to trust others and you feel that you are unable to find peace due to restlessness and impatience. A block in this chakra can be triggered by experiences that are very emotionally hurtful and from something that leaves you feeling drained of all emotions due to a lack of boundaries. For example toxic friendships or relationships with unreciprocated efforts where you feel you have repeatedly given you all to others regardless of how many times you have been hurt by the same people. Another example could be experiencing hurt because you are unable to accept a truth about yourself therefore you hold in your emotions and become drained.

A block in this chakra can arise from experiencing a difficulty in communication or when other people ignore you or make you feel that they are not listening to what you have to say. The 6thpoint is the third eye chakra, which is indigo in colour and is located in the center of your eyebrows. It represents extra-sensory perception and its associated animal is a Black Antelope. This chakra is responsible for your intuition, ability to see things from a broader perspective, how motivated you are to find your true calling in life and strive towards it and how well you balance emotion with reason.
If this chakra is out of alignment then you might feel like you have no purpose for doing the things that you do in life and that you are going around in circles instead of progressing forward. It can be pushed out of alignment by ignoring or doubting your own intuition or by dedicating your energy to something that does not resonate with your authentic self. For example, you could work as an electrician however find that on each job you are frequently counselling your workmates and might have a thought that gets you thinking about why you are an electrician when you feel more natural and joyful being a counsellor. This is an example of doing something that you feel does not align with who you know that you are at your core. If you have looked at the above list and feel that there are too many similar symptoms among various chakras to be able to tell which one is out of balance then you might prefer a different method. You could try dowsing with a crystal healing pendulum. To understand how to cleanse and look after the pendulum please read my ‘healing crystal’ post first. Once you have completed these steps and have finished cleansing and grounding yourself you can hold the pendulum with your dominant hand, dangling the pendulum over a clear surface (this may be a clear desk) and ask the it “what is the motion for NO”. You will notice it will either swing in a circular motion vertically or it will swing horizontally to indicate which answer is which. You can repeat this and ask about what the motion is for YES and if you are still unsure then you can repeat this process seven more times to gain clarity. After you have established this, you can ask a yes or no question for each chakra to find out whether they are balanced or not. For example you could say, Is my root chakra balanced right now? If the answer is neither a yes or no due to the pendulum swinging out of control then this could indicate that the energies are too unclear right now to receive an answer.
